Year 5 have been learning about Early Islamic Civilisation this half term. This is what we have learnt about in 5P.
We learnt that Baghdad was built in AD 752, in Iraq, as the new capital of the Islamic Empire.
Baghdad was known as a circular city because it had a circular wall. The city was 1km in diameter.
It was located next to the River Tigris and it was on trade routes which meant that traders that could come and trade there easily.
Baghdad had the world’s first universities and hospitals, as well as an observatory.
It also had a magnificent building called the House of Wisdom, which stored 1000’s of books, translated into Arabic, from around the world. Many scholars (experts in a certain area of knowledge) studied there, researching areas such as, medicine, algebra and optics. One scholar discovered a way of putting people to sleep when they had operations. We decided we would rather have lived in Baghdad in 900AD rather than in Europe because the medicine was much more advanced, for example, the scholars developed medicine using herbs and plants.
