Visiting the Mosque by 5W

5W enjoyed a trip to a local mosque in Hounslow on Wednesday 12th February. This was part of our learning about Islam and Early Islamic Civilisation topic.

When we arrived, we removed our shoes and girls covered their heads as a sign of respect. The Imam took us into the prayer room where we saw the Qibla wall, Qur’an, Minbar, prayer mat and Tasbih beads. Did you know that men and women pray separately? Also, Allah has 99 names which are reflected on some of the Tasbih beads.

Once we had finished learning about the features of a mosque and had the opportunity to ask questions, we had a tour of the library. We noticed that the Qur’an has been translated into many different languages. Interestingly, Arabic is written from right to left (the opposite way for us!)

After this, we were shown the washing area. This is where Muslims perform Wudu in order to prepare for prayer. Did you know that Muslims pray five times a day, facing in the direction of Mecca?

We have really enjoyed learning about this religion and if you have any questions, please ask 5W to find out more.
