Thames Young Mariners – Year 6

This adventurous and eventful residential started off on Wednesday the 5th of June 2019. All the Year 6 children-who had been waiting for this moment ever since the beginning of the year-were buzzing with excitement for this once-in-a-lifetime trip to begin. On the day of TYM, all of us were packed up and completely ready for our venture into pure nature; we would be surrounded by only trees, rivers and the sky.

To begin the day (when we were all bubbling with enthusiasm), we made our voyage to Thames Young Mariners in Richmond. When we arrived, everyone was flabbergasted by the spectacular views of the river. After a spot of lunch, we were finally told who we would be sharing a tent with for the next two nights. The decision was made by the Year 6 teachers: Ms Chadwick, Mr Mantle, Mrs Briggs and Mr Ostro. All of the 90 children were extremely thankful for who was in their tent. Once everything was sorted and a TYM tour had been complete, all of Year 6 grinned from ear to ear knowing this was to be an extremely memorable trip.

Full of anticipation, all the children settled down in their tents then immediately were told what day groups they would spend their time in. After a few minutes- full of excitement- we were off to our first activity! All the activities – which were advertised to be amazingly fun and literal for all ages- included on and off water experiences: woodland recreation, sailing, orienteering, raft building, kayaking and finally (the Chase Bridge tradition) THE DOCK JUMP!

One of the many pursuits during TYM, was the woodland activities. These test the children’s abilities in the wild and taught us helpful life skills: lighting a fire, building a den and lots more. A standout moment was no-doubt the stupendous dock jump: it helped us conquer our fears and resulted in us being remarkably more confident. Many would agree that this was an absolutely astonishing expedition that will stay in our hearts forever.

From all of Year 6 we want to thank the staff at Thames Young Mariners for making this experience ten times better – we couldn’t have done it without them! We would also like to thank all the staff who gave their time to chaperone us and give us all the comfort and support we needed, especially Mrs Briggs for organising this residential.

When Year 6 depart Chase Bridge, this excursion will definitely be an event to remember.
