You may have seen big changes taking place in our garden area and wondered what has been happening in the wildlife area, so we spoke to the team behind the garden’s transformation to find out more.

As part of the programme called Edible Gardens, the school has recently been offered £20,000 from the charity Trees for Cities to create for an edible garden for pupils to enjoy. On top of this, an extra £10,000 has been contributed by the Friends of Chase Bridge to make the Edible Playground come to life.

The money has helped transform the garden area and the left over money will be used to fund a year long programme of training, workshops, assemblies, tools, seeds etc to ensure that we make full use of the garden and learn the basics of growing your own veg and fruit.
We spoke to Hugh Chapman, the Landscape Co-ordinator (pictured above), to find out more. His team have been in charge of building the new garden.
Hugh told us that new garden will soon be finished and one of the most interesting characteristics was the hazelnut archway.

There will also be a green house for fruit and vegetables to grow in winter.

We were excited to learn that every class, in each year group, will be planting and growing things like: strawberries, leeks, carrots, onions, tomatoes and many more.
Once the building team are finished, the planting team will arrive to start the growing process. In the garden they will be adding: soil, worms, creatures, bicycle wheels, compost bins, pathways and archways.

We can’t wait to see what it looks like when it is finished!

4M enjoyed reading your awesome interview!
We are excited about seeing things grow on the bicycle wheels and planting our vegetables. We can’t wait to try some new vegetables or fruit. We look forward to exploring the new objects in the garden, like the hazelnut archway.

We are most excited about walking through the archway and looking at the bicycle wheels. We also want to experiment with different fruit or veg that we may have not experienced before.
We are curious to know: why is it called a hazelnut archway?
