International Deaf Awareness Week

International Deaf Awareness Week was celebrated last week. Held at the end of September to commemorate the first World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf in Rome in 1958. It is celebrated through activities and events by Deaf Communities worldwide and aims to promote human rights for deaf people, provide a platform for them to tell their stories and have their voices heard.

We spoke to Coach Ben and Tom in 5B about the importance of deaf awareness.

Coach Ben, is Brentford Coach at Chase Bridge who is deaf. He was asked about why Deaf Awareness Week is important.  He said, “To stop all the barriers for deaf people around the world.”

Tom from 5B, who uses hearing aids, answered “I think it’s important to have hearing aids otherwise children like me couldn’t go to school.”

We asked Coach Ben if it’s hard for people to learn sign language. He replied, “It depends on the person and you have to practise.”

Coach Ben feels that it’s really important to show deaf people can do anything they want to do. and we agree.

Have a go at learning the alphabet in sign language.

Do you know sign language?
